Product data

Product data is information that describes a product and presents its properties and technical details. It helps customers to understand the product and get to know its special features.

  1. Product details page (PDP)
  2. Creating product data
  3. Product attributes & categories
  4. Product data feedback – reports
  5. Creating variants
  6. Translating product data (2 options)
  7. Useful links and downloads

1. Product details page (PDP)

The product details page (PDP) is the crucial place where customers decide whether or not to purchase an item. A well-structured and comprehensive PDP can help sellers to win over potential buyers and strengthen their intention to buy. The more detailed and comprehensive the product information is, the better informed customers are about their purchasing decisions. It reduces uncertainty and increases the likelihood of a purchase, while also reducing the return and complaint rate.

2. Creating product data

Product data differs from offer data (see Offer data or the FAQs below). Before offer data can be created, product data must be added. Many products are already listed in the Kaufland marketplaces catalogue. These are clearly labelled with a unique EAN. Products that are not yet listed must first be created.

When creating the product data, the mandatory attributes are the minimum details required. If these attributes are not specified, the product data is invalid and will not be displayed on the marketplaces. Additional optional attributes such as colour, length and width (depending on the product category) make the product presentation clearer and more attractive to customers. Optional attributes are also critical for correct variant creation and influence how easily your offers are found on the Kaufland marketplaces.

You can create your product data manually or automatically on the Kaufland marketplaces:

Creating product data manually

  1. In your Seller Portal, go to Offer management and select „Offers”.
  2. Click on +Create offer.
  3. Enter your EAN, the manufacturer or the item description in the search field to check whether your product is already in our product database.
  4. Is your product displayed in the search results? If so, you can create your offer immediately without having to create new product data, as we already have your desired item on file.
  5. Please note: Check the accuracy of the existing product data before you create your offer.
  6. 5. Can’t find the product? Create a new product by clicking on +Create new product.

Creating a new product

  1. Now enter all the attributes step by step in the Product data tab.
  2. First, select a sales channel on which the product should be displayed and enter the EAN number of the product.
  3. Next, enter all the required attributes for your selected product in turn.
  4. For manufacturers that we have not yet listed, please send the brand name of the manufacturer to us via the contact form.
  5. Save the product data.
  6. In the Offer tab you can now create an offer immediately using the product data you have created.

Uploading a product data file via CSV upload

  1. Download the product data template
  2. Proceed as described here to create your CSV file: Creating products via file.
  3. In your Seller Portal, go to Offer management and select “Manage imports“.
  4. Click on Previous imports and then select the Product data imports tab.
  5. Click on Upload Product Data File.
  6. Upload your CSV product data file and select Upload file to confirm.

Transferring CSV product data file via URL

In your Seller Portal, go to Offer management and select “Manage imports”.

  1. Click on Automatic product data upload.
  2. Enter the file path of the CSV file as a URL.
  3. Specify the exact time when the files should be automatically received.
  4. Save the details by clicking on Save changes.

Transferring product data via API/interface partner

Product data can also be transferred via the Kaufland Seller API. You can find more information in the Seller API documentation.

3. Product attributes & categories

You can use attributes to enrich your products with structured data. This data specifies the properties of the item and makes them comparable with other products in the same category. You can see which attributes can be selected here:

Accurate categorisation is crucial to ensure the legally required attributes can be assigned to the item correctly. The category tree contains all product categories in all available languages in Excel format:

You can find more information in the Product Data Guidelines under “4. Attributes and structured product data” and “5. Choosing the right category”

4. Product data feedback – reports

In your Seller Portal, you can request and download important feedback on your products and their respective status as a concise report. Go to Reports > Information about your product data.

  • “EANs not found”: This is a list of all EANs that could not be found when listing your offer data. That means that there is no product data already on file for these EANs. You can edit these products and then import them as a product data file.
  • “Invalid items”: All the products that you currently cannot offer because required information is missing. Please check which required attributes are missing for each of the items affected and update them as necessary.
  • “Product data improvement export”: An overview of all your offers’ product data. Choose the report, then select the category. This will give you an overview of all the relevant attributes for the sales channel selected. By comparing these to your own values, you can improve the quality of your product data.
  • “Import error in the product data file”: An overview of all product data, regardless of the respective sales channel, that was rejected when importing the selected product data file.

5. Creating variants

Artificial intelligence regularly compares product data and creates variant groups based on the available information. Therefore, if new products have been introduced or product data has been changed, variant groups may be added to or deleted. Due to the vast number of items on the Kaufland marketplaces, it is unfortunately not currently possible to assign variants manually.

However, the following notes will give you a way to encourage accurate creation of variant groups:

  1. Items must be in the same category to be put into the same group.
  2. Attributes such as colour, target group, diameter or contents must be fully completed in to be grouped together while variant groups are being created.
  3. Use similar titles and descriptions. For example:
    • Helloworld t-shirt, black, size S
    • Helloworld t-shirt, black, size M
    • Helloworld t-shirt, black, size L
    • Helloworld t-shirt, blue, size S
    • Helloworld t-shirt, blue, size M
    • Helloworld t-shirt, blue, size L
  4. Please note: Your chances of creating variants are compromised if you use titles for your products that are inconsistent or contrary to the recommendations.
  5. Please ensure that only the titles and descriptions of items you wish to be grouped together are similar or identical. Otherwise more items than you wish might be combined into one group.
  6. Items must be available to ensure that the selection of variants is visible. If individual products in a pre-established group have no price, they will be removed from the variant dropdown menu.
